Nigerian-born Chinwe Onwurah wins her constituency for Labour Party in United Kingdom

A Nigerian-born lady living in the United Kingdom, Chinwe Onwurah, has won election for the Labour Party in her constituency during the General Election that was held in the kingdom, it was gathered on Friday, July 5, 2024.

Onwurah is the first daughter of the late Dr Onwurah from Umuogbo Village in Awka, the Anambra State capital, who lived in the UK for many years before his death, according to information from her profile.

According to reports from the Sky News on Friday morning, Chinwe Onwurah was elected to represent the Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West having polled 18,875 votes to defeat her rivals from other parties, including the Conservative Party.

Also confirming her election and congratulating her, Arunma Oteh, a former senior Nigerian government official and former Treasurer of the World Bank, displayed the screenshot of the result of the general election on her verified X handle.

According to the information, Onwurah of the Labour Party polled 18,875 while Ashton Muncaster of the Reform Party came second, securing 7,815 votes.

The candidate of the outgoing ruling party, the Conservative Party, Frances Lasok, came a distant third by securing 4,228 votes and candidate for the Independence Party, Yvonne Ridley, had 3,627 votes.

Candidate of the Green Party (GRN), John Pearson, got 3,228 votes while the candidate of Liberal Democrats (LD), Ali Avaei, secured 1,946 votes.

Since Onwurah was able to get more than the 11,060 majority votes required, she has secured her seat in the British Parliament to represent Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West.

According to the results of the general election across the country, the Labour Party secured 410 seats to secure the majority in the parliament, while the Conservative Party had 131 seats. The leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer, is expected to form a new government.

Many members of the current parliament also lost their elections at their various constituencies.
