According to Eurosport, Defending champions Italy were eliminated from Euro 2024 as Switzerland delivered an outstanding performance to cruise into the quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory in Berlin.
Switzerland, impressive in the group stage and narrowly denied top spot in Group A by a late Germany equaliser, took early control in this last-16 match. They dominated possession and kept Italy pinned back for much of the game.
The breakthrough came as Remo Freuler surged into the box and fired a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma with a deflection to open the scoring.
Italy, needing a strong response after a dismal first half, suffered another blow just 30 seconds into the second half when Nicolo Fagioli's mistake was punished by Ruben Vargas, who curled a stunning shot into the top corner.
Despite several near misses—Fabian Schar hitting the post with a header and Gianluca Scamacca striking the woodwork from close range—Italy failed to mount a significant comeback. Their performance fell short across the board.
Switzerland secured their place in the Euro quarter-finals for only the second time and will face either England or Slovakia in the next round.
