At a news conference on Saturday in Abuja, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria reiterated this, making it clear that none of the media reports about an agreement between Nigeria and the EU indicated that the former had acknowledged LGBT rights.

In a press conference held in Abuja and aired on Channels TV on Saturday, Bagudu and Mohammed Idris, the Ministry of Information's counterpart, declared that Nigeria would not sign a deal that would violate the country's constitution or the religious and cultural sensibilities of its diverse populace.

The Federal Government's signature of the Samoa Agreement has been shrouded in controversy, with many disapproving of what they perceived to be the Nigerian government's acknowledgment of LGBT rights. The Samoa agreement provoked a flurry of online comments, many of which were critical of LGBT rights, in direct opposition to the 2014 law that then-President Goodluck Jonathan had passed outlawing same-sex unions and gay partnerships.
