Senate President Denies Approval of New Presidential Jets Amid Economic Concerns

opera.com 4 days ago

The President of The Senate, Godswill Akpabio has clarified that the red chambers has not approved the purchase of new presidential jets for President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He described any report suggesting otherwise as malicious.

Akpabio maintained that the Senate had not endorsed any decision to acquire new jets, countering claims that the National Assembly would approve such a purchase despite the nation's economic challenges.

According to The Punch, the controversy arose after the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence recommended buying new aircraft due to the current presidential jets being deemed faulty and unsafe.

Recall that this recommendation followed President Tinubu's recent use of a private jet to attend the inauguration of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

This debate highlights the tension between maintaining presidential security and addressing the country's economic constraints, with both sides presenting their views on the necessity and timing of acquiring new presidential aircraft.
