When I Allowed My Hair to Remain Uncombed, I Had What Some of You Thought Were Dreads—Dele Farotimi

Human rights activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi has shared a personal anecdote that highlights the societal pressure to conform to norms. In a video posted by Sahara TV, Farotimi recalled a period when he stopped combing his hair, allowing it to lock up and appear like dreadlocks.

Farotimi noted that despite his appearance, he was not insane but rather protesting the madness of a society that prioritises superficiality over substance. He expressed fascination at how others, who were "completely insane by the standard of any rational society," judged him as insane simply because of his uncombed hair.

According to him, "I remembered the time when I allowed my hair to remain uncombed and then it locked up, and I had what some of you thought were dreads, but they were not dreads. I just allowed the thing to knot up. But during that period, it used to fascinate me how people who are completely insane by the standard of any rational society used to look at me like I was the one insane simply by reason of the fact that, in protest at the madness of that society, I elected not to comb my hair."
