The national leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has distanced itself from Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso following his letter to the party’s National Assembly members about the ongoing Kano Emirate crisis.

Kwankwaso’s letter, signed by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, allegedly instructed NNPP federal lawmakers to criticize President Bola Tinubu and the federal government regarding the Kano Emirate issue. However, in a letter dated July 2, 2024, addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the NNPP leadership clarified that Kwankwaso's directive does not represent the party's official position.

The letter, titled “Re: Need for NNPP Federal Lawmakers to make urgent and concerted efforts to end immediately the siege on Kano by agents of the federal government,” was signed by NNPP National Chairman Agbo Gilbert Major and National Secretary Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday. They urged the National Assembly leadership to disregard Kwankwaso’s directive.

The letter stated, “Our attention has been drawn to a letter dated June 24, 2024, with the above-quoted heading and signed by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed addressed to members of the National Assembly. We wish to state clearly and for the record that the letter written by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed was without the mandate and authorization of the legally recognized leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).”

The NNPP emphasized that the party remains focused on the development and well-being of Nigerians, noting that the matter is currently before competent courts and that National Assembly interference would complicate the situation. They also highlighted the need for enhanced security in Kano to prevent a breakdown of law and order and stated that the NNPP does not wish to engage in controversy with federal agencies, especially security institutions.

Previously, a pro-democracy group, Progressives League of Youth Voters (PLYV), had expressed concerns over Kwankwaso’s letter to NNPP lawmakers in the National Assembly.
