Nigerian politician and former Director General of the Obi-Datti 2023 presidential campaign council, Doyin Okupe has revealed the response that Late Chief Moshood Abiola gave him when he asked how he knew many proverbs.
He made the revelation in a post that he shared on his official X handle. Doyin Okupe was paying tribute to the deceased when he made the comment. In the post that he shared on his page, he said when he asked Abiola how he knew many proverbs, he responded by saying his father was a talking drummer.
He said Abiola told him that he learnt all the proverbs from his father. He said his father was very proficient in the trade of drumming.
Here is what Doyin Okupe wrote on his official page;
"When I asked him how he knew so many proverbs, he said his father was a "Gangan" (talking drummer) and he was extremely proficient in the trade because if you were not in those days, you will not prosper in the trade. He said he learnt the proverbs and adages from him. So while in the UK, I went with him for an interview at the SKY NEWS TV. During the interview, in response to a question from the white lady journalist, MKO retorted, "If you see fire inside a well, that is the hand of man", the journalist was completely taken aback and could not hide her confusion. MKO just stared into space and did not say a word. Later when I asked why he did not explain the meaning, he told me that we go through a lot of trouble to learn English, so let them (white people) learn our own culture and manner of speech too".
