Super Eagles Striker Eyes Trabzonspor Stay After Southampton Struggles

opera.com 2024/5/19

According to Soccernet.ng, Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu is awaiting word from Southampton over his future in Trabzon, where he will play for another season.

After a disastrous six months at St. Mary's Stadium, where he failed to score in all 12 of his appearances for the English team, the Nigerian signed a season-long loan with Trabzonspor.

Onuachu has been playing at a high level since joining the Turkish team. He recently scored a hat-trick as Trabzonspor defeated Gaziantep FK 4-2.

The former Genk striker has stated his wish to continue playing at Papara Park for another season and seems to be adjusting well to life in Turkey.

His statement, as earlier quoted by Saints Socialite, was:

“I am very happy in Trabzon. My family and I want to stay here.”

Following his hat-trick victory over Gaziantep FK, Onuachu talked about his future and acknowledged Southampton's control over his time with the team.

“I am trying to help in the best way possible. Coming back with such goals makes an important contribution to self-confidence. I am happy here; of course I want to stay, but ultimately my club has a decision to make.” Said the Super Eagles’ striker.

Due to a lack of attackers, Trabzonspor is forced to negotiate for another season-long loan after failing to pay Onuachu's €12 million buy-out clause.

In the event that this agreement falls through, the Trabzon-based team is looking into other possibilities with the goal of signing five or six players by the end of the current campaign.
