Inspector General of Police Condemns Violence in Rivers State, Orders Thorough Investigation

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has strongly denounced the recent outbreak of violence and breakdown of law and order at several Local Government Council secretariats in Rivers State. The unrest erupted following clashes between supporters of rival political factions over the tenure of Local Government Council Chairmen. Tragically, this confrontation resulted in the deaths of Police Officer Inspector David Mgbada and Samuel Nwigwe, a vigilante member in Eberi-Omuma, Omuma LGA.


In response to these disturbing events, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Police Public Relations Officer (FPPRO), conveyed that the IGP has directed the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olatunji Disu, to immediately heighten security measures throughout the state. The IGP has also mandated CP Disu to initiate thorough investigations into the killings of the police officer and the vigilante member, as well as the broader violence that erupted.


To support these efforts, the IGP has deployed operatives from the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to assist the Rivers State Command in apprehending the perpetrators responsible for these heinous acts. The IGP issued a stern warning to individuals and groups involved in senseless attacks and killings of police officers and other security operatives across the country, stressing that they will face the full weight of the law.


CP Olatunji Disu has been instructed to focus on increasing patrols, strategically deploying officers, and enhancing intelligence operations to prevent further outbreaks of violence and ensure the safety of all residents in Rivers State. The IGP expressed sincere condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased police officer and vigilante member, acknowledging their unwavering dedication and sacrifice in the line of duty.


In conclusion, the Inspector General of Police called upon all residents and political stakeholders in Rivers State to exercise restraint and pursue peaceful means of resolving differences. He underscored the critical importance of maintaining law and order in the state, emphasizing that the Nigerian Police Force is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
