Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has been challenged by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to a popularity battle, in which he is to stroll through the streets of Benin City and other parts of the state alongside Asue Ighodalo, the party's nominee.

Vanguard reported that the APC asserted that Oshiomhole, the state's former governor, is more well-liked than Obaseki and that if the governor accepts the challenge, he will be eventually defeated.

The party's deputy governorship nominee, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, spoke during the opening of the local government and ward campaign councils of the Oredo LGA.

He stated, "Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has been out of government for eight years now, and the current governor, Obaseki, has been there for almost eight years."

"We want Obaseki to take the hands of his candidate, Asue Ighodalo, and walk around the streets of Benin City and other places in the state, and Oshiomhole will take the hand of Okpebholo and do the same thing, and see what will happen."

According to the APC, if Obaseki accepts the challenge, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, their candidate, would win the poll since Obaseki is not connected to the people.

Okpebholo stated, "If elected, my administration will not listen to gossip; we will be there to work for the Edo people so that there will be progress in the state. We are ready to send them packing because they have failed us."

Sen. Matthew Uroghide, the APC Campaign Council's Director General, voiced optimism for the party's prospects by releasing a statement.

He said, "APC has done enough for the people to win the election, including our candidates who are sitting members of the National Assembly and have been working for their people."
