According to Punch, The Nigerian Senate has directed the Nigerian Army to pay compensation to the families of victims of the Enugu killings, which occurred on June 29, 2023. The Army had mistakenly attacked members of the Eke Neighborhood Watch, killing two and injuring several others.

The Senate's directive follows a report by its Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, which investigated the incident. The Committee recommended that the Army should condolence visit to the Eke community, pay compensation to the families of the victims, and sympathize with the injured.

The Senate also urged the Nigerian Armed Forces and other paramilitary organizations to prioritize inter-agency cooperation and collaboration to achieve the objectives of the National Defense Policy. Additionally, the Senate directed the Armed Forces to educate civilians on their rules of engagement and modes of operation to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Committee's report detailed the incident, stating that the Neighborhood Watch members were attacked by soldiers while responding to a distress call. The report criticized the Army's actions as unwarranted and excessive, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries.
