FG approves 35% increase in salary for workers

The Federal Government has approved an increase of between 25% and 35% of civil servants salaries on the remaining six Consolidated Salary Structures.

They are: Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated PoliceSalary Structure (CONPOSS), ConsolidatedPara-militarySalary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS) and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).

It will be recalled that those in theTertiaryEducation and Health Sectors had already received their increases which involved Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS)and Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) for Universities.

For Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, it involved the ConsolidatedPolytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and ConsolidatedTertiaryEducational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS).

The Health Sector also benefitted through the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and ConsolidatedHealth Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS).

A statement signed by the Head of Press, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Emmanuel Njoku said the increase takes effect from 1st January 2024.

The statement said: “In line with the provisions of Section 173(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),

the Federal Government has also approved increases in pension of between 20 per cent and 28% for pensioners on the Defined Benefits Schemein respect of the above-mentioned six consolidated salary structureswith effect from 1st January 2024”.

Workers Day: Ngige urges increased dialogue

Former minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has urged the organised labour to exercise patience while sticking to social dialogue as the surest key to equable industry peace necessary to optimise national production.

In a statement in Abuja by Senator Ngige Media Office, the former Anambra governor said the time was challenging to all Nigerians especially workers who receive fixed salaries even in the face of run away prices of goods and services,

arguing that more patriotism was needed from the tripartite community to tackle the dwindling economic fortune.

“This period thus needs a lot of patience and sticking to due process in line with the ILO principles of dialogue,

bilaterally and in some cases tripartite dialogue or even Tripartite plus to achieve the needed industrial peace and enhance productivity in the workplace and thereby boost the Nigerian Economy .

“I further wish the organised labour a fruitful tripartite plus Minimum Wage negotiation that’s still ongoing and a very successful May Day.”

Newly appointed Benue Police boss, Hassan allegedly detains anti-corruption activist, Mojekwu

The newly deployed Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Mr. Yabaneth Steve Hassan, on Tuesday night, allegedly ordered the detention of Mr. Uchenna Mojekwu, a Civil Rights Activist and Secretary of Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN).

The development is in connection with the petition written against Dr. Dennis Akura, the Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Recall that in February 2024, the GICN, through Mr. Mojekwu, submitted a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),

detailing how the government of Alia, through his Aide, Akura, allegedly authorized and withdrew over N20bn from the Benue local government accounts, attaching evidences of letters signed by different Council Chairmen and Directors.

Masquerade attack on female nurse: Concerned Enugu resident seeks Gov Mbah’s action

A concerned resident of Enugu State, Mr Nnamdi Odo has called on the governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah to urgently intervene in the case of a female nurse who was brutalised by masquerades.

DAILY POST reports that the female nurse, Miss Ogbonna Blessing who was heading to her place of duty was beaten to a pulp in Nsukka area of Enugu State.

The development has since attracted outrage.

In an open letter to Governor Mbah, titled: “Urgent Intervention Needed to Address Brutality in Nsukka Local Government Area”, Odo said Miss Blessing’s case was one out of many.

He told the governor, “I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of utmost urgency that requires your immediate intervention. It concerns the recent incident of brutality inflicted upon a nurse in Nsukka Local Government Area by a masquerade.

“The appalling act of violence against the innocent nurse is not only a grave violation of human rights but also a clear indication of the breakdown of law and order in our community.
