When will Nigerian Political Godfatherism end as the fight Between Wike and Fubara continues

opera.com 2 days ago

As reported by Premium Times, the political crisis in Rivers State began in October 2023 due to a conflict between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his former political mentor, Nyesom Wike. "Wike attempted to control my administration using state resources after I assumed office in May," stated Fubara. This practice among outgoing Nigerian governors undermines democracy.

The power struggle has divided the State House of Assembly, with most members supporting Wike's impeachment efforts. "Several pro-Wike commissioners have resigned and returned, adding to the chaos," explained one lawmaker. 27 lawmakers defected from PDP to APC, intensifying the conflict. Violence has also erupted, with Fubara claiming "a bomb exploded at the state hotel, intended to justify declaring an emergency to remove me."

"This crisis highlights political godfatherism in Nigeria, where powerful individuals hijack parties and undermine democracy," stated analyst Chidi Odinkalu. Nigeria needs legal frameworks to prevent such dominance, learning from mature democracies. "Otherwise, Nigeria's democracy remains under threat from so-called democratic dictators," Odinkalu warned.

The fallout between Fubara and Wike has led to instability, with the divided legislature and violence. Analysts say this crisis exemplifies how political godfathers undermine Nigerian democracy. Legal reforms are needed to curb such authoritarian behavior and protect the country's democratic future.
