The National Legal Adviser of the Labour Party, Kehinde Edu, has asserted that Peter Obi would be a stronger candidate for the 2027 presidential election if he adheres to the party's internal democratic processes and acknowledges its authority.

Speaking during an interview with Arise TV at 20:30, Edu emphasized the necessity of a fair and competitive selection process, stressing that Obi must be willing to contest alongside other aspirants rather than being unilaterally chosen as the party's flag bearer.

"Obi will be a better presidential candidate if he subjects himself to the supremacy of the party and engages in a fair competition with anybody who wants to be a candidate," Edu stated.

He underscored the importance of internal democracy within the Labour Party, warning against the imposition of candidates without due process. According to him, allowing open competition would strengthen both the party and the eventual candidate.

"In a situation where you say you handpicked somebody, that's the candidate, and everybody should keep quiet, I think it's not good enough. It's not good enough for the party, it's not good enough for the candidate that will emerge at the end of the day," he remarked.

Edu recalled the party’s approach in the 2023 general election, noting that while multiple aspirants purchased nomination forms, many voluntarily stepped down in favor of a consensus. He suggested that a similar democratic approach should be maintained for 2027 to ensure a fair and transparent process.

The Labour Party has yet to officially announce its strategy for the 2027 elections, but Edu’s remarks highlight the party’s commitment to internal democracy and fair competition among aspirants.
