NED 2-3 AUT: Former Man United Midfielder Wins Player Of The Match Award After His Superb Display
Austria made history by qualifying for the knockout stage of the UEFA European Championship for just the second time, following a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in Berlin. This triumph, their first in eight head-to-head meetings, secured them second place in Group D.
Both teams entered the match knowing a draw would suffice for progression, but the game began with unexpected intensity. Austria's aggressive high press immediately pinned the Dutch back, and within six minutes, Alexander Prass’s dangerous cross forced Donyell Malen into an own goal, giving Austria an early lead.
The first half was a pulsating, end-to-end affair. Netherlands' Tijjani Reijnders and Malen both missed the target with good chances, while Austria's Marko Arnautović was thwarted by a quick reaction from Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, preventing a second Austrian goal.
After the break, the Netherlands came out with renewed energy. Xavi Simons drove the ball forward and set up Cody Gakpo, who equalized with a perfectly placed curling shot. Austria, however, quickly regained their composure. Just before the hour mark, Florian Grillitsch lofted a ball into the box, and Romano Schmid headed it home to restore Austria’s lead.
The Dutch were relentless in their search for another equalizer and found it when Memphis Depay volleyed past Austrian keeper Patrick Pentz with 15 minutes left. Austria responded almost immediately; Christoph Baumgartner released Marcel Sabitzer, who found acres of space and powered his shot into the roof of the net. Baumgartner nearly added a fourth goal, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Austria held on during a frantic final few minutes to secure a historic victory. Coupled with France’s draw against Poland, Austria finished first in Group D, setting up a Round of 16 match against the runners-up of Group F. The Netherlands, finishing third, now face a daunting clash against England.
Former Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer was named player of the match for his decisive goal and commanding presence throughout the game.
