According to the report from the Vanguard, Nigerian singer Nwakaego Ogbaro, popularly known as Ego, has opened up about her experiences since leaving Lagbaja’s Africano band in 2007. In a conversation on Chude Jideonwo’s podcast, Ego discussed the challenges she faced and addressed long-standing rumors about her relationship with the masked musician.

Ego dispelled speculations that she and Lagbaja were romantically involved or married. She clarified that her departure from the band was her own decision, not the result of any conflict with Lagbaja.

"We did not fight; there were no issues," she said. "I believe in my instincts a lot, and at that time, it was telling me to move. I felt there was nothing more I could do to top what I had done. So, I said it was time for me to move on. I wanted a band of my own, to do my own thing, my kind of music. We talked, and he was happy for me, though it was bittersweet. He said, 'I knew you had this leadership quality. I knew you are one of those people that would end up having her band,' and he was very supportive."

When asked if she ever considered returning to Lagbaja’s band, Ego admitted, "Yeah, I will explain why I said yeah. I craved that comfort where I didn’t have to make certain decisions, where all I needed to do was just sing, dance, and get my pay. There were days like that because it was hard: dealing with people from different backgrounds, dealing with a lot, and having to make it work. There was a time I called him [Lagbaja] and said, 'I know I probably gave you a hard time, but now I understand what it means.' And he was like, 'Okay,' and I said, 'Ah, it’s not easy. It wasn’t easy.'

"There were days I felt like being part of a band again, just touring and being on the tour bus. There were days like that."

Ego's reflections provide insight into the complexities and rewards of her journey as an independent artist after her successful stint with Lagbaja's band.
