East Should Be Given A State That They Need, That Part Has Suffered A Lot Of Injustice —Shehu Sani

In a recent statement, human rights activist and public commentator, Senator Shehu Sani, has spoken on the ongoing debates over state creation, particularly for the Southeast, and the amendment of the constitution, during a recent interview with The Sun.

These discussions are currently taking place at the National Assembly.

Senator Sani, a former lawmaker, addressed the merit of these debates.

He underlined the need for clarity on the country's future direction.

Senator Sani argued that if the country is serious about restructuring, the focus should not be on creating new states.

He believes that a reconfigured Nigeria would lead to the dissolution of states.

Instead, he suggested a return to a regional arrangement.

However, Senator Sani acknowledged that if the country does not revert to a six-region arrangement, it would be fair to create an additional state for the Southeast.

He highlighted the historical injustices faced by the Southeast.

"If we are not going to go back into six regional arrangements, it is fair and just that the Southeast will be equalized with other zones and be given a state that they need if that will bring development to that part of the country."

"That part of the country has suffered a lot of injustice for a problem that is not theirs, and they are carrying a historical stigma which is passing from parents to children and to grandchildren, and that is a very dangerous thing for the unity of the country," Senator Sani said.
