When Lieutenant General ( Rtd) Mwaniki Njuki bowed out of the military in 2011 following the major shakeup in the Kenya Defence Forces by the then President Mwai Kibaki, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Joseph Kasaon was the obvious choice to succeed him as the Ngao House Kenya Army headquarters.
Lt General ( Rtd) Kasaon had served in the military for some over three decades when he took charge of the Kenya Army from Njuki whom he had deputized.
In 2015, as President Uhuru Kenyatta made changes to the top military command, Lt General ( Rtd) Kasaon was elevated to the position of the Vice Chief of Defence Forces to deputize General ( Rtd) Samson Mwathethe. At the Kenya Army headquarters, he was succeeded by Lt General Leonard Muriuki Ngondi.
But in a surprise move, in 2018, Lt General ( Rtd) Kasaon unexpectedly resigned from his top military position, citing personal reasons. He was succeeded by the then Lt General Robert Kibochi, the future CDF.
But in November 2022, just two months after taking power, President William Ruto picked the former Kenya Army boss as the new board chairperson of the Kenya Meat Commission. He had previously served in rye same position having been appointed by former President Kenyatta.
The KMC is now domiciled in the ministry of Defence with the members of the KDF running the state corporation.
