NAF airstrikes kill several terrorists in Borno

Airstrikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets have killed several terrorists near Degbewa and Chinene in Borno State.

The Nation reports that, the airstrikes also destroyed several terrorists’ structures in the two terrorist hideouts in the Mandara mountain.

Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, spokesperson for the NAF, revealed this in a statement on Thursday, July 4. He said the airstrikes took place on July 3.

The air interdiction came five days after 32 people were murdered and 52 injured in suicide attacks in Gwoza, Borno State.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) warned that its troops would'stop at nothing' to eliminate the terrorists responsible for the attacks.

Gabkwet stated that the air attacks were necessary following several days of aircraft surveillance over Chinene and Degbewa, which revealed "a consistent gathering of a large number of terrorists in the area also suspected to be sites for manufacturing Improvised Explosive Devices and storage area."

He stated: "The terrorists were also observed lingering in the area, evidently unaware of what was to come, and most likely sure that their location was safe and secure from any type of military attack.

"The airstrikes were thus allowed, with the planes bombing the targets in many passes until the majority of the terrorists were killed.

Others seen fleeing the scene were shot with cannons."
