President William Samoei Ruto has suffered a huge blow after the Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo withdrew from his recently convened taskforce to audit public debt that Kenya is supposed to repay to its lenders.
While taking to her social media platforms, the Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo said that the taskforce which was formed by President William Samoei Ruto is unconstitutional. She also said that the role of the Law Society of Kenya is to protect and assist the public and advise the government on matters concerning law and not audit public debt.
She informed President William Samoei Ruto that the office of the auditor general is the one which is mandated with the task of auditing public debt in every financial year as per the 2010 constitution. She reiterated that the Law Society of Kenya will not take part in the auditing of the public debt.
This comes after President William Samoei Ruto during his Friday address to the nation from State House, said that he has convened a special taskforce to audit public debt as per the request of Kenyans during the recent anti-government protests. Ruto said the move will pave way for Kenyans to understand public debt that they are paying.
The head of state further informed those who have attained retirement age to proceed with their retirement immediately. He also stopped the purchase of new motor vehicles for the government as part of the austerity measures to limit spending.
President William Samoei Ruto further abolished the office of the First Lady, Second Lady as well as the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary.
