Alhaji Buba Galadima, the Secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has provided insight into the genesis of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), clarifying misconceptions regarding its origins. Galadima stressed that, contrary to common belief, President Muhammadu Buhari was not person that formed the CPC but they formed the CPC.
Galadima described the difficult process of getting President Buhari to leave the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and embrace the CPC ranks. After six months of intensive attempts, President Buhari was initially hesitant to make the decision. Only with the assistance of a respected statesman, whose generosity President Buhari had previously experienced, was the critical move achieved.
In the words of Galadima, according to the report by The Sun News, "The world should know that Buhari didn’t form CPC. We formed the CPC, and for six months, we were trying to convince him to leave the ANPP and join the CPC. He refused to do that until we went and got a statesman, of whom Buhari was a beneficiary of his grandeur. We went and persuaded him because he bought the first car for Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida and Shehu Yar’Adua, to talk to Buhari before he accepted to join CPC."
