Kenyan President William Ruto recently announced his willingness to cut his own salary and that of other top government officials as part of a broader initiative to implement austerity measures. This move is aimed at addressing the country's economic challenges and reducing the fiscal deficit.Ruto directed the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to halt any planned salary increments for himself, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, ministers, principal secretaries, and other top officials.

He emphasized the need for an internationally recognized compression formula to ensure equitable salary distribution among civil servants before any salary hikes are considered for top officials. This step is intended to narrow the wide pay gaps within the public service sector, where some civil servants earn significantly more than others.

Additionally, Ruto ordered budget cuts across various government sectors, including travel, hospitality, vehicle purchases, and renovations. He also urged the judiciary, county governments, and the legislature to work with the National Treasury to implement similar austerity measures. This initiative comes after widespread public opposition led to the shelving of the Finance Bill 2024.

President Ruto’s decision reflects his administration's commitment to living within its means and addressing public concerns over government spending. By setting an example through his own salary, Ruto aims to encourage a culture of fiscal responsibility and equity in Kenya's public sector.v
