According to a report by Punch. In order to withhold funding for Local Government Councils led by unelected officials, the House of Representatives has ordered the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission to establish a special account.

Ademorin Kuye (APC, Lagos) and Jonathan Gbefwi (SDP, Nasarawa) sponsored a motion of urgent public significance at a plenary session on Tuesday, which was followed by the House's decision.

Kuye made an argument in support of the motion by citing Section 7 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As amended) Constitution, which ensures the establishment of a local government system headed by democratically elected individuals and mandates that state governments do so.

According to him, the local government is the most important tier of government as “It is the closest to the people and forms the foundation of both the state and Federal Governments.

After the motion was approved, the House directed its Committees on State and Local Government Affairs and Finance to collaborate with RMAFC in order to refuse funding to local governments that are headed by individuals who are not elected.
