According to a report by Al Jazeera, the Israeli military has killed a top Hamas government official in an airstrike on Gaza City. Ehab al-Ghussein, the Hamas-appointed deputy labour minister of Gaza, was among four people killed in the attack, according to the enclave's Civil Defence.

The airstrike targeted a school building sheltering a large number of displaced people on the western outskirts of Gaza City. Video footage verified by Al Jazeera's fact-checking news agency Sanad showed dozens of displaced people fleeing the school after the ground floor was bombed.

"The dead and injured were transported to the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in the city," the Civil Defence reported.

The killing of al-Ghussein, a senior Hamas official, marks a significant blow to the militant group's leadership in Gaza. Hamas has condemned the attack as a "war crime" and vowed to retaliate.

The latest violence comes amid ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian factions in Gaza.

The conflict in Gaza has raged on for months, with both sides trading airstrikes and rocket fire. The violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of Palestinians, including many civilians, and caused widespread destruction in the densely populated coastal territory.
