Kenya is in shock after extraordinary events that resulted in the military being called in by President William Ruto's administration after protests over a finance plan that suggested tax increases turned deadly and set portions of Parliament on fire.

Thousands of protesters marched against the tax rises in Nairobi, the Nation's capital, and other locations last week as part of the mostly peaceful start to the rallies, which are led by young people.

Amid growing dissatisfaction over the nation's cost-of-living crisis, lawmakers decided to approve the controversial finance package.

Tensions erupted on Tuesday when police in Nairobi opened fire on crowds that had broken into the Parliament building.
