"We're Raising From Criminality" Pres Ruto Speaks Sends This Message To The Gen Zs After The Demos

President William Ruto, addressing the nation on June 29, 2024, emphasized the need to distinguish between the legitimate concerns raised by young Kenyans and the acts of criminality perpetrated by some individuals during recent demonstrations in Nairobi.

"We must separate the issues our young people are raising from the criminality of those who are looting people’s shops and destroying public property. These are very separate issues and we must deal with them as they are," Ruto stated firmly.

The demonstrations erupted in response to the proposed finance bill, which many Kenyans believed would have severe negative impacts on their livelihoods. The bill included provisions that would significantly increase taxes and reduce subsidies, exacerbating the economic hardships faced by many citizens. The unrest in the streets was a manifestation of widespread frustration and anxiety about the future under the proposed legislation.

However, amid the protests, incidents of looting and vandalism surfaced, diverting attention from the peaceful demonstrators' core message. President Ruto condemned these acts of violence and emphasized that such behavior undermined the legitimate grievances being voiced by the youth and other concerned citizens.

In his address, Ruto acknowledged the validity of the public's concerns and announced that the controversial finance bill would be withdrawn. "We have heard you, and we are committed to finding a solution that addresses your needs without compromising our nation's stability and growth," he assured.
