In an interview with Punch, Chief Sanya Atofarati, the Zonal Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West, expressed concerns about the state of the Nigerian economy, describing it as harsh and challenging. Atofarati said that there has been a significant loss of confidence in the All Progressives Congress (APC), its administration, and the leadership of President Tinubu, even among those who previously supported the party.

Atofarati highlighted ongoing efforts within the PDP to address internal divisions and reconcile differing interests. He emphasized the importance of comprehensive reconciliation initiatives aimed at accommodating diverse perspectives within the party. Specifically, he pointed to the South-West region, where reconciliatory efforts have brought together previously disparate factions, including Governors Makinde and Adeleke, who had divergent views during the presidential election.

Acknowledging past disagreements and divisions within the PDP, Atofarati underscored the collective recognition of the need to prioritize the welfare and interests of Nigerians. He cited the adverse impact of internal discord on the populace, particularly in light of the challenging economic conditions prevalent across the country. In light of the perceived failure of the APC-led administration to effectively address economic challenges and deliver on its promises, Atofarati noted a growing disillusionment among citizens, including former APC supporters. The erosion of confidence in both the party and President Tinubu's leadership reflects broader discontent with the current state of affairs.

Despite past political differences, Atofarati emphasized the imperative of unity and solidarity within the PDP as it seeks to offer a viable alternative to the incumbent government. He expressed optimism about the party's capacity to effect positive change and address the pressing needs of Nigerians, particularly in mitigating the harsh economic realities facing the populace.

According to him, "We have realized where the lapses are, and we have embarked on a comprehensive reconciliation whereby all interests can be factored in. That is what we are doing currently, and I can assure you of that. Look at South-West, for instance. Governors Makinde and Adeleke were not on the same page on the presidential election, but today, we are all together because we have realized that our error is affecting Nigerians. The economy is now harsh, and things are difficult. Even those who voted for the APC no longer have confidence in the party; they no longer have confidence in the administration or the leadership of President Tinubu."
