A court in Kano ruled that Muhammadu Sanusi II's reappointment as the 16th Emir of Kano was invalid. However, the Kano state government rejected this ruling and stated that Sanusi remained the rightful Emir. According to Vanguard News, the government also demanded that the previously deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero vacate a government property so it could be demolished.
Delivering ruling yesterday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad-Liman said, “I hereby order that every step or actions taken by the respondents in pursuant to Kano Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024 is null and void and is set aside. However, this order does not affect the validity of the law.”
He added, “I think it is a very serious matter for anyone to flout the orders of the court and go scot free with it.''
A local chief, Alhaji Aminu Babba-Dan'agundi, had filed a legal challenge to the Kano Emirate (Repeal) Law of 2024, which had reinstated Sanusi as Emir after his previous removal. The court ruled that the state government's actions taken under this law were void, but ordered the prior situation to be maintained while the case is appealed.
Despite the court's initial ruling, the Kano state government insisted that Sanusi was still the legitimate Emir. They directed the police to remove the deposed Emir Bayero from the Gidan Nassarawa palace, which the government planned to demolish and reconstruct.
