The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has issued a stern ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding the presentation of the 2024 budget within seven days. The lawmakers warned that failure to comply would set a dangerous precedent and plunge the state into a constitutional crisis.

In an interview with Channels Television, Enemi George, a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, emphasized the importance of a budget for the state's functioning. "Nothing can happen without a budget. It's not a banana republic. We're not animals. Things must be done according to law," George stressed.

The lawmaker reiterated the Assembly's willingness to work with the government in the interest of the state but insisted that a budget is essential for progress. "We cannot run without a budget," George added. This development comes amid a prolonged crisis that has divided the House into two factions, with the Amaewhule-led Assembly holding its first sitting on Monday. The lawmakers' move is seen as an attempt to assert their constitutional authority and prevent a potential political crisis in the state.

The Assembly's ultimatum highlights the critical role of the budget in the administration of the state, ensuring that all government functions and services are funded and operate smoothly. The absence of an approved budget could lead to a halt in public services, affecting millions of residents.
