opera.com 3 days ago

In a significant bust, Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a large cache of illegally imported arms and military items at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMA) in Lagos. The seizure, announced by Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, includes 55 semi-automatic shotguns, drones, ballistic vests, walkie-talkies, and various military and paramilitary badges, uniforms, and binoculars.

This is the second major arms seizure in 48 hours, following the interception of 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of ammunition at the Onne Port in Port Harcourt on July 1. The total duty value of the seized items is approximately N1.56 billion.

Adeniyi attributed the success to intelligence gathering and collaboration with local and international partners. One suspect has been arrested, and the items will be handed over to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons for investigation and prosecution.

The Customs Service has vowed to continue working with other agencies to apprehend those involved in illegal imports and ensure national security and economic prosperity. This seizure serves as a warning to those considering similar illicit activities, demonstrating the Service's commitment to securing Nigeria's borders.
