In a recent interview with Arise Television, Sumner Sambo, the politics editor for Arise, expressed his concerns over the ongoing dysfunction within the Rivers State House of Assembly. Sambo's analysis centered on the critical need for intervention to restore order and the rule of law in the state's legislative body.

Sambo pointed out the crucial role of the Attorney General of the Federation in addressing the dysfunction. He emphasized that the Attorney General's intervention is not just vital for the state but has significant implications for the federal government. Without action, the unresolved issues in Rivers State could potentially affect the broader governance framework of Nigeria.

According to Sambo, the National Assembly must recognize its constitutional authority to step in when a state assembly fails to function properly. He highlighted that the National Assembly is empowered to intervene and take control of the Rivers State House of Assembly if it remains inoperative. This step is essential to prevent a situation where a small minority makes legislative decisions for the entire state. Sambo pointed out that allowing the dysfunction to persist undermines the integrity of the legislative process. He noted the absurdity of a scenario where only three individuals in the Rivers State House of Assembly are passing laws, which compromises the democratic process and governance.

Sambo called for the Attorney General to uphold the rule of law and ensure that proper legislative procedures are followed in Rivers State. He stressed that restoring functionality to the state assembly is crucial for maintaining the legitimacy and authority of the federal government. He advocated for the National Assembly's intervention and the Attorney General's proactive involvement to safeguard the rule of law and prevent further governance issues at the federal level.

Hear him: "The Attorney General of the Federation should understand that if he doesn't intervene and allow the rule of law to prevail in Rivers State, it may affect the federal government. The National Assembly is not there for play. If the Rivers State House of Assembly is not functioning, the National Assembly has the constitutional right to take over the state house of assembly in Rivers State and stop the absurdity where three people are passing laws."
