The story of actor Matayo Keya, popularly known as Alphonse Makokha, has moved Kenyans to tears.

What killed Makokha's wife?

The Vioja Mahakamani actor's wife, Purity Wambui, passed away on Sunday, June 2, after a long battle with cancer.

The witty actor had been married to Wambui for 30 years, and they were blessed with adorable children, with the lastborn aged 11.

Wambui bravely fought cancer for 18 years until her last breath. Speaking in an interview with TUKO.co.ke, he shared that the kids were affected by the death of their mum, as they miss her warmth and presence.

"It has hit and affected them. They are in disbelief. The youngest, who is 11 years asks where mum is. I have to lie and say she is in Heaven. She has gone to be with the Lord. I have to counsel the little one. It is painful, sad and hard," he emotionally shared.

Makokha revealed that Wambui died while he was on his way to work and lauded his friends for delivering the news with such grace.

"Ni kidonda sijui itaisha lini lakini najua itaishi forever. Nilikuwa naenda job. I told my daughter, please take care of your mum. I was going to look for my daily bread. Kabla tufike katikati ya safari (It's a wound that will live with me forever. I went to work and told my daughter to take care of her mum. Before we got to where we were going she was no more)," he said during the touching interview.

Makokha reveals why women are special

The multi-talented actor admitted that things won't be the same after he lost his soulmate.

"Ni uchungu sitakuwa na jiko wangu karibu ambaye alikuwa ananipenda, (it is painful to lose your spouse, someone who loved you dearly)," the teary actor said.

Makokha noted that women are special and deserve to be treated well, advising men never to hit women, no matter the circumstances.

"Nilikua nasema wamama ni watu wa maana sana duniani…..wanaume msijaribu kuinua hata mkono hata slap…tunajua wana mdomo but don’t try to hit your wife at all. Huwa wanapitia kama sisi tu wanaume, tuwe na peace kwa hii dunia na familia (I was saying that mothers are very important people in the world... men, do not even attempt to raise your hand to slap them. We know they can talk, but don't try to hit your wife at all. They go through the same things as us men. Let's have peace on this earth and in our families)," he said.
