US Defence Minister has Military Degree, 41years in Military while Angie has no military experience

The Department of Defence is considered one of the most important departments in the United States of America, only experienced individuals with the right qualifications and experience in military are considered for the position of Defence Ministry. In US Lloyd James Austin III was sworn in as the 28th Secretary of Defense on 22January 2021 and serves on National Security Council. Mr Austin spent 41-years in military before being appointed as Defence Minister.

Unfortunately in South Africa the appointment of Minister in Defence is handled differently. In the new Government of National Unity (GNU), president Ramaphosa announced former minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, as the new Defence Minister. Unlike Mr Austin, Motshekga has trained as a teacher. She has no experience or any training in military. The US Defence Minister Mr Austin graduated from the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission in the Infantry.

During his 41 year career he held positions like Command at the Corps, Division, Battalion, and Brigade levels. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in counselor education from Auburn University, and a Master of Business Management from Webster University. He is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced courses, the Army Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College.

In terms of experience, career and qualifications its clear Mr Austin is the right candidate for the position. He is also a former 4 star army general. Obviously we can't say the same for South Africa 's Defence Minister, Angie Motshekga.

It's clear the USA 's Defence Department is amongst the key departments of the government, hence only qualified, experience people hold that position. Considering the Defence Ministry in South Africa, do you think Angie Motshekga qualifies for the position of Defence Ministry?
