With the future of Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome now in the hands of President William Ruto amid calls for his firing, it remains to be seen if the Head of State is going to act.

Koome has come under sharp criticism over the manner in which he handled the recent anti-government protests by young protestors.

In the protests that turned bloody, at least 41 Kenyans lost their lives with police officers accused of being behind most deaths amid claims of use of excessive force, including firing live bullets.

And now, human rights groups and activists now the police chief to be fired, saying that his officers are trigger happy.

For now, his job is safe. But all in all, his fate now lies in the hands of Ruto who appointed him to the position in 2022 to succeed Hillary Mutyambai.

Should Ruto release the trigger, who is most likely going to succeed Koome as police chief? Could it be the right time for Kenya to have the first ever female Inspector General of Police in the history of the country?

In the rank of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police, Rosemary Kuraru Sipatan is one of the senior most female cops in the country.

Kuraru is currently serving as the director of human capital development at the police headquarters. This makes her senior enough to be appointed as police chief should Ruto find it necessary to send Koome home.
