In a determined effort to combat illegal mining, the South African Police Service (SAPS) under Operations Vala Umgodi has made significant strides in the Ekurhuleni District. On 3rd July 2024, a coordinated operation led to the arrest of 29 suspects in the Boksburg Policing Precinct for various offenses, including illegal mining, possession of drugs, and illegal immigration.
