In a powerful show of support, Safaricom has donated Sh50 million to help victims of recent anti-budget protests. These protests, sparked by the rejection of the Finance Bill 2024, have caused significant harm and unrest across Kenya.

Safaricom's CEO, Peter Ndegwa, announced the donation at Kenyatta National Hospital. He emphasized the company's dedication to supporting Kenyans during crises. “Our foundations are here to support the people, especially during emergencies. We are pleased to provide structured support to hospitals for infrastructure improvement and patient recovery,” he stated.

The donation, funneled through Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations, allocates Sh10 million to Kenyatta Hospital’s Disaster Response Centre. Another Sh5 million will directly assist those injured and admitted to the hospital. This aid includes providing assistive devices, smartphones, and airtime for those who lost phones during the protests. Additionally, it covers three months of food and one year’s rent for individuals in dire conditions.

Safaricom has also earmarked Sh12.5 million for similar initiatives nationwide. These funds will establish medical camps in affected areas. The first camp is set for Githurai on July 6, 2024, followed by Rongai.

Dr. Evanson Kamuri, CEO of Kenyatta Hospital, expressed gratitude for the partnership with Safaricom. “We are happy to partner with Safaricom and continue to have a positive impact on Kenyans seeking medical assistance at this time of need,” he said.

The protests, initially sparked by public disapproval of the Finance Bill 2024, have led to widespread unrest in major cities, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kisumu. The demonstrations escalated into violent clashes with police, resulting in over 40 deaths and extensive property damage. Businesses have been looted, and critical infrastructure has been vandalized.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has vowed decisive action against those responsible for the chaos. Despite President Ruto’s decision to send the bill back to Parliament, protests have continued. Demonstrators demand more substantial changes and government accountability.

Safaricom’s medium-term strategy involves mobilizing its Gen Z employees under the #GenZforGenZ initiative. This initiative will see volunteer squads leading community outreaches, clean-ups, and medical camps.

Safaricom’s substantial donation highlights its commitment to aiding the nation during turbulent times. Their proactive approach aims to alleviate suffering and restore hope to those affected by the unrest.
