Kenya hosts refugees from several countries such as Somalia, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda. The nation's relative peace has made it attractive for people freeing their countries. Most of this people leave their country due to war. Kenya has several refugee camps the largest one being Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County. Being located in a semi arid region, water shortages is a thing of concern, especially during the dry season.

Dadaab was established in 1991, when refugees fleeing civil war in Somalia started crossing the border to Kenya. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Dadaab refugee camp has 302,805 registered refugees and asylum seekers. Dadaab refugee camp has a large population such that there is economic activities carried out inside the camp. There are also schools, and hospitals inside the camp. Some sections are so densely populated that it almost resembles a city. With more refugees coming in the camps resources are increasingly being overstretched.
