Dreaded Haitian gang leader, Jimmy Chérizier has called for cease-fire days after security officers were deployed to the war torn country.

During a presser on Friday, the gang leader formally conceded defeat and told interim Prime Minister Garry Conille that he would lay down his arms to initiate a national dialogue to restore peace.

This comes a week after the gang leader rallied his members, urging them to fire on the Kenyan contingent who were manning the streets of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. He said the Kenyan police were invaders, vowing to fight the officers even if it meant dying on the battlefield.

Kenya had despatched the first contingent of an international police force to Haiti, to tackle rampant gang violence in the Caribbean country.

About 400 police officers were reported to have left Nairobi on a Kenya Airways flight to Haiti.

The United States has been by far the main political and financial backer of the Multinational Security Support mission, pledging a total of $300 million to support it despite opposition in the US Congress, from many Haitians, and in the Kenyan courts.
