Azimio la Umoja coalition leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday urged the government to initiate an immediate investigation into the destruction of property and robbery incidents that occurred during the protests on Tuesday, July 2.
In a press conference, the former Prime Minister accused President William Ruto's administration of being hesitant to address the suspects responsible for the chaos on Tuesday.
Odinga asserted that the government possessed sufficient information about the sponsors of the ongoing demonstrations but had opted not to take action against them.
He noted that the vandalism and robbery witnessed on Tuesday were distinct from the earlier protests, where Gen Z participants had complete control.
While expressing his opinion on the disruptive protests, Raila cautioned the offenders to quit their activities or face serious repercussions.
“For thugs to hijack the protests and turn them into mayhem against innocent Kenyans amounts to a double betrayal of the youth. The bad manners have to be stopped.
“People who are not the Gen Z that started the initial protests hijacked it, looted businesses, attacked innocent Kenyans and destroyed critical infrastructure.” Raila declared.
The leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party continued by expressing sympathy for the families who were most negatively impacted by yesterday's tumultuous protests.
In addition, he denounced police abuse and asked security personnel staffing protests to treat demonstrators with respect and responsibility.
Less than a day has passed since Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki warned of criminal gangs pretending to be nonviolent protestors with the goal of trespassing on both public and private property.
Security services were on high alert to intercept and block any attempt to harm the people or target key infrastructure, according to a press statement from CS Kindiki.
