Alake asks Tinubu to declare July 13 ‘Wole Soyinka Day’

The Alake and Paramount ruler of Egba Land, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare July 13 a national day to celebrate Prof Wole Soyinka’s contribution to humanity.

The paramount ruler also said Soyinka should be honored with the second highest national honour of Grand Commander of Order of Niger as the Nobel Laureate marks his 90th birthday.

Oba Gbadebo made this call on Tuesday, during a press conference held to herald events lined up to mark the 90th birthday of the first African Nobel Prize winner in Literature.

The royal father said as way to further honour the playwright, he is declaring July 13th ‘Wole Soyinka Day’ and this will be celebrated by all sons and daughters of Egba land both at home and in the Diaspora.

Akpabio, Abbas Task ECOWAS Parliament On West Africa Challenges

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas have said the myriad challenges in the West African subregion can be surmounted if the ECOWAS Parliament is galvanised by the spirit of unity, innovation, and an unwavering belief in the subregion’s shared destiny.

While Akpabio stressed the need to transform the region’s collective aspirations into enduring achievements, Abbas urged the parliament) to find solutions to the menace of terrorism, banditry, piracy, human trafficking, human rights abuses, the impact of climate change and bad governance in the sub-region.

They spoke yesterday at the opening of the 2024 First Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament at the National Assembly, Abuja.

US to provide $2.3bn in new security aid for Ukraine

The United States will provide a new $2.3 billion security assistance package for Ukraine that will include key air defence and anti-tank weapons, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Tuesday.

The announcement comes as Kyiv’s weakened and outgunned forces, are struggling to hold back invading Russian troops, with Moscow regularly claiming the capture of new villages in eastern Ukraine.

“The United States, will soon announce more than $2.3 billion in new security assistance for Ukraine,” Austin said at the start of a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umerov.

“This package, will provide more air defence interceptors, anti-tank weapons, and other critical munitions” drawn from US stocks, Austin said.

Ogun Assembly demands rehabilitation of deplorable roads

Ogun State House of Assembly, has urged the State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya to intensify efforts on road reconstruction and rehabilitation across the state.

The Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, made the call on Tuesday while responding to the submissions of a member representing Ijebu-North East State Constituency, Oluseun Adesanya and his Ifo 2 counterpart, Fola Salami, who reported the situation of roads in their constituencies.
