A 29-year-old woman, Ms Mbali Makokone, was found dead in a room at her homestead in Lusaka, Mawoti, Nanda, on Sunday. Her 38-year-old husband, who is a suspect in her murder, was arrested on Sunday.
The couple's has two children, aged two and six, were found unharmed in the same room. According to eyewitnesses, the suspect had a history of domestic violence and had previously threatened to kill his wife.
The suspect allegedly told police that he had not intended to kill his wife, but had meant to stab himself instead. However, police found a knife with traces of blood and hair on it, as well as a pair of scissors and a bloody axe, at the scene. The suspect's family members said that they had tried to intervene in the past, but the suspect had refused to seek help.
The victim's brother said that the family was devastated by the loss and demanded justice. Police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, confirmed that the suspect would appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. The motive for the murder is still unknown.
