In a significant victory against the illegal drug trade, Cape Town authorities have seized 28,500 ecstasy tablets worth an estimated R6.5 million. The operation, conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS), led to the arrest of a foreign national and the discovery of a drug manufacturing facility in Maitland.

The bust occurred after police intercepted a suspect in possession of a large quantity of ecstasy tablets. Upon interrogation, the individual disclosed the location of a clandestine address in Maitland. Acting on this information, SAPS officers conducted a swift raid on the premises.

Inside the Maitland address, authorities uncovered not only additional quantities of ecstasy but also sophisticated drug manufacturing equipment. The devices included pill presses and chemical precursors, indicating a large-scale production operation.

The discovery of these manufacturing devices is particularly concerning as it points to a broader network of drug production and distribution within the region, said Lieutenant Colonel Mbeki of SAPS. Our efforts will continue to target and dismantle such networks to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.

The foreign national, whose identity remains undisclosed pending further investigation, is currently in police custody. Authorities are probing his connections to other potential drug operations in the Western Cape and beyond.

This operation marks one of the largest drug busts in Cape Town in recent years and underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb the spread of illegal narcotics. The seizure of such a substantial quantity of ecstasy is expected to deal a significant blow to the local drug trade, disrupting supply chains and preventing the distribution of harmful substances within the community.
