It is estimated at R460 000 the amount received by Mrs Nonhlanhla "Mama Webhantshi" Mbhele from the death insurance policies she had used to cover her relatives, who were shot and killed by hitman allegedly arranged by her.

This was revealed on Thursday at the Durban High Court when the prosecutor Mrs Nadira Moosa read Mrs Mbhele's bank statement, during the ongoing trial of the case against Mr Mthofi Msipha.

Mrs Mbhele is facing three charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and fraud. Msipha is suspected to have been the one who got him the hitman that killed Ms Susan Xolo who is her sister, Mr Thamsanqa Mthembu, who was born to his friend he used to serve in the African church and Mr Thulani Cele who was her sister's husband.

The prosecutor also pointed out that the bank statement shows how she withdrew the money once the insurance had paid. She said the people she had taken out insurance for were killed within 6 months. It turns out that Mrs Mbhele took out insurance for her sister Mrs Xolo from the bank on 4th June 2019, she was shot dead on 15th July the same year.

The prosecutor went on to say that Ms Xolo's insurance paid R100 000, since she had died in an accident. It is said that Mrs Mbhele had taken out Mthembu insurance on 24 February 2020, and was killed on 21 April of the same year. She applied for insurance payment on 28 April, and was paid R100 000. The insurance policy she had taken out in her son's name, she paid him R100 000, making it R200 000 the money she received from Mthembu's death.

On the day she received the money, the bank statement shows that she withdrew R2 000 on two occasions. The next day, she withdrew R3 000 three times, and she also withdrew R1 000. On April 30, she withdrew R5 000 two times from an ATM in Amanzimtoti. On the same day, there is another R3 000 which she withdraws in two intervals.

When the prosecutor asked her why she was taking out the money, she said she doesn't remember, but what she knows is that the card was taken by her mother, sister and brother, to go shopping in most cases.

Cele had taken out insurance for him on the 24th of February in 2020, and he was killed on the 26th of June. It is said that Mrs Mbhele applied for payment after Cele was buried on the 7th of November. The insurance paid her R100 000, and she took it for her son and paid him R60 000. Also this time, it turned out that she had received money, she didn't hesitate, she took out R3 000. The next day she took out R5 000, and then took out at intervals until she reached R30 000.

The prosecutor told Mrs Mbhele that she was withdrawing the money because she was going to pay the hitman who did the work for her. She denied that, saying that she was going to buy construction materials with it as she was renovating her house, building bedrooms for her brother and sister.

The prosecutor said that she was lying as it turned out that she paid by card at the building supplies store.

When asked why she did not give money to Mthembu's family members since she was paid R200 000, she said that did not occur to her. The question of why all these people she had taken out insurance for were killed in the same way, it has been a few months since they were covered. She said she was also surprised by that.

When asked why those who took the insurance for them registered as her cousins, when she is not related to them - especially Mthembu, Mrs Mdlalose and the Radebe brothers - she said she saw that this was a mistake on the part of the bank, which she did not say.

The prosecutor asked her why she was paying for these insurances since she was not working. She revealed that she was paying it with the money (R5 800 every month) of her husband's pension, who worked in the municipality - who was also shot and killed.

She said that she was paying R-2 000 in total for this insurance, including her son's.

The case was adjourned for another day, when it is expected that the debate between the prosecutor and the defense lawyers will begin.
