Court remands church member for allegedly stabbing bishop to death
A Magistrate’s Court in Osogbo, capital of Osun State, has ordered the remand of a 42-year-old man, Wale Ogunsanmi for allegedly killing his church founder, Shina Olaribigbe.
The Criminal Investigation Department of the Osun State Police Command dragged Ogunsanmi to court and slammed with a lone count of murder.
The charge sheet obtained by The Point and marked MoS/19c/2025, was signed by the head of the legal/prosecution section of the state CID, B. Adaraloye.
Adaraloye explained that the deceased was stabbed to death on January 1, 2025 at about 8:55pm at Fab Milk Area of Ajegunle, Osogbo.
It read, “That you Wale Ogunsanmi, on the 1st of January, 2025, at about 8:55pm, at Fan Milk Area of Ajegunle, Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did unlawfully stab one Shina Olaribigbe to death and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Volume 1, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.”
The plea of the defendant was not taken due to the severity of the offence.
Presiding Magistrate, A. O. Odeleye, ordered that Ogunsanmi be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter.
The Point had reported that Olaribigbe, a bishop and founder of Rapture Empowerment International in Osogbo, Osun State, was allegedly gruesomely murdered by Ogunsanmi, his jealous church member.
Police arrested Ogunsanmi for allegedly stabbing Olaribigbe to death after he saw the man of God with his estranged wife together in her room.
Ogunsanmi’s wife is an interpreter at the deceased’s church.
Yemisi Opalola, the command’s spokesperson, had disclosed that the bishop was at the woman’s house when the husband arrived.
“The husband stabbed him several times, and he died. It is believed the husband acted on suspicion that the pastor was having an affair with his wife,” she said.
According to the police, Ogunsanmi and his wife had been living apart for about a year due to marital disputes.
Reports indicate that the bishop had been mediating their conflicts before the separation.
The suspect allegedly broke into his wife’s residence and attacked the clergyman, who was reportedly in the bedroom at the time of the altercation.
Police officers from the Dugbe Division responded promptly, arrested Ogunsanmi at the scene, and recovered the weapon. The deceased’s body was deposited at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.
