Historic 12th Defeats: Manchester United's Coach Amorim Insists on his Beliefs
Ruben Amorim insists he will “stick with his beliefs” after Manchester United suffered their 12th Premier League defeat of the season, leaving them languishing in 15th place. The Red Devils’ nightmare campaign continued as James Maddison’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 win for Tottenham, with the England midfielder silencing critics including Roy Keane with his goal celebration.
According to the Guardian, United’s misery was compounded by a stunning second-half save from Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, denying Alejandro Garnacho a crucial equaliser. The defeat means United have now suffered their most losses at this stage of a season since their infamous relegation in 1974, with just 12 points separating them from the bottom three.
Since Amorim’s arrival, United have struggled to find consistency, suffering humiliating defeats against rivals such as Liverpool, Manchester City, and even mid-table sides. The mounting pressure on the Portuguese coach is undeniable, with fans growing restless over the team’s inability to turn things around.
Despite the poor run of form, Amorim defended his injury-hit squad after key players Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Amad Diallo were ruled out. However, he admitted that results must improve quickly. “You grow and you learn a lot of things. We just need to face it and not run away,” he said.
“Today hurts it’s painful to lose so many games but things can change in a week. My job is very difficult here, but I stick with my beliefs. Right now, we need to stop focusing on the big picture and just take it one game at a time. We have to finish the season strong and then assess things properly.”
United’s lack of depth was evident, with Victor Lindelöf the only available substitute with senior experience. Amorim admitted the situation had disrupted preparations. “At the start of the week, we were training well, but day by day, we kept losing players. I don’t want to use that as an excuse many teams are suffering the same. Sometimes, you just have to face the challenge.”
With United in freefall, Amorim faces a massive task to salvage the season. But with fans growing impatient and the club edging dangerously close to an unthinkable relegation battle, time may be running out for the under-fire boss.
