Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hinted that young talent Ethan Nwaneri could be deployed as a centre-forward in the future, stressing the need for tactical flexibility in his attacking setup, according to a report by All Nigeria Soccer.

Ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg clash against Newcastle United, Arteta discussed the teenager’s potential role in the frontline, confirming that the 17-year-old could be used in a central striker role despite his usual position as an attacking midfielder or winger.

“We’re going to have to be very flexible in the frontline and now the ones that we have in our feet, make sure they stay fit and keep contributing,” Arteta told reporters during the pre-match press conference. “Leo [Trossard] can play in that position, Raheem [Sterling] has played in that position, Ethan I think can play in that position, Martinelli can play there so let’s see in relation to how everybody is; the moment and opponent, but at some point, we’re going to have to try something different.”

Nwaneri has impressed Arteta with his versatility. Although he has largely featured as a creative force in midfield or on the wing, Arteta emphasized that he could be deployed centrally as part of the team’s broader tactical approach, especially considering the demands of a packed fixture schedule.

The Arsenal boss also acknowledged the potential benefits of squad rotation and adaptability, stressing that being able to shift players into different roles could give the team a strategic advantage.

“We’re going to have to try something different at some point,” Arteta explained, emphasizing the importance of keeping the squad dynamic. “Having players who can fill various roles is crucial. It’s a busy schedule, and at times we may need to adjust to the circumstances, and Ethan is one of those players who can help us in various positions.”

Arteta’s comments are a reflection of the need for squad depth and flexibility as Arsenal continue their campaign across multiple competitions. Nwaneri's potential as a centre-forward remains to be tested in match conditions, but Arteta has consistently shown confidence in the young player’s development and potential to contribute in various attacking roles.

The Gunners’ current setup includes several options for the forward positions, with Leandro Trossard, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Martinelli, and Nwaneri all capable of playing in multiple spots. Arteta remains committed to ensuring that the squad stays competitive, utilizing the depth of talent at his disposal to keep momentum across the hectic months ahead.
