According to Punch, The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Ihsanatu Shaaibu and an unnamed accomplice following a disturbing case of child abuse involving Shaaibu’s five-year-old stepdaughter. The case came to public attention after a video showing the severe abuse went viral on social media, sparking outrage and calls for immediate action.

The video depicted the child with visible injuries, prompting widespread condemnation. Witnesses claimed that the abuse had been ongoing for months, with neighbors reportedly hearing the child’s cries but being too fearful to intervene due to Shaaibu's alleged threats.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, it was confirmed that the suspects were apprehended on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Adejobi stated, “In relation to the viral video where a woman identified as Ihsanatu Shaaibu physically abused and caused grievous injuries to her stepdaughter, a five-year-old, the suspects have been arrested today and will be prosecuted as soon as investigations are concluded.”

Sources close to the investigation revealed that the child had been subjected to brutal punishment, including beatings with sharp objects and being denied food as a form of discipline. Medical examinations confirmed multiple injuries, including bruises and lacerations, which suggested prolonged abuse.

Child welfare advocates have expressed concern over the rising number of child abuse cases, urging authorities to implement stricter laws and better monitoring systems. This case follows another in Lagos where a teacher was arrested for assaulting a three-year-old pupil.

Police officials assured the public that the suspects in this case would face the full weight of the law. Adejobi added, “The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting vulnerable individuals, especially children, and ensuring that perpetrators of such heinous crimes are held accountable.”

The abused child is now in the custody of child protection services and receiving medical and psychological care. Advocacy groups have called for more support for the child, including legal representation and long-term rehabilitation.
