No President In History Who Has Spent Money To Be Reelected In The History Of Nigeria Like GEJ–Gabam
Shehu Gabam, National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has voiced concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing re-election in 2027, citing mounting public dissatisfaction with his administration. Drawing a parallel to the political struggles faced by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, Gabam warned that widespread discontent could undermine Tinubu’s bid, regardless of campaign spending or political influence.
According to a report by *Vanguard*, Gabam criticized several of Tinubu’s economic policies, which he claimed have placed immense hardship on ordinary Nigerians. He highlighted the removal of the petrol subsidy as a key factor contributing to economic strain, as it triggered a significant hike in fuel prices. Additionally, Gabam condemned the unification of foreign exchange rates, which has weakened the naira and worsened financial challenges for citizens.
Beyond these economic measures, Gabam expressed concern over the rising costs of electricity and telecommunications services, which he said have made life increasingly difficult for Nigerians. While acknowledging that these policies may have been intended to stabilize the economy, he argued that they have instead deepened public hardship and eroded confidence in the Tinubu administration.
To improve his prospects for re-election, Gabam urged Tinubu to reevaluate these economic strategies and introduce reforms that alleviate the suffering of the people. Failure to address these concerns, he warned, would likely further alienate voters and diminish Tinubu's political appeal ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gabam emphasized that public dissatisfaction, rather than financial resources or electoral manipulation, could determine the outcome of the next election. He drew lessons from Jonathan’s downfall, which he attributed to mass disappointment and persistent protests.
“Protests against Jonathan started two years into his administration, and he couldn’t survive it,” Gabam remarked. “No president in Nigeria’s history has spent money to be re-elected like Jonathan did. If people think Tinubu will use money, they are mistaken. You can only rig while you are still popular.”
